I already knew how important photos are before having Quinn. This, in part, came from being a crime reporter for eight years and writing about horrible things: deadly car crashes, fatal fires and freak accidents. I always asked families and friends to share photos of the person they lost. Always. These people didn’t know me but invited me into their homes to look through albums and piles of photos, which usually evoked stories about the person now gone. I learned photos help families and friends feel connected to the person they lost.
But Quinn has reminded me how important photos are in the everyday of life – when the person is still with us. He turned 1.5 years old last week, and I have thousands of photos of him. And I’m surprised at how often I go back and look at them with him still being so young. But my memory sometimes forgets how his hair – at 10 days old – made a perfectly pointed tip on the top of his head, how much he’d giggle when my dog licked food off his hands when he was starting solids and how when he was learning to sit up his legs would fling up in the air if he fell back. I’m so happy to have these moments captured.
I know scheduling a photo session is easy to put off. But if you’ve been thinking about one, get in touch with me. We could be missing moments that you one day may need help remembering.
Here are the photos of Quinn that I mentioned, followed by one of him from this morning during one of our many impromptu sessions.
