jamison murphy | the first CD

Jamison released his first CD this week!

He’s been on the blog several times. He’s a 13-year-old singer-songwriter who’s written more than 200 sings and does covers, including songs by Pink Floyd, Neil Young and The Shins. Instruments he plays include guitar, piano, mandolin, dobro, banjo, dulcimer, glockenspiel, ukulele and didgeridoo.

In 2008, he won 1st place in the Savannah Folk Festival’s Youth Songwriting Competition (he was the youngest winner). He was featured in a two-page spread in the Jan/Feb 2009 issue of Savannah Magazine. (You can read that story here.)

Tomorrow at the Savannah Market Bazaar, Jamison will offer his music for sale for the first time. His self-titled CD features 5 songs: “Disguise,” “The Ballad of Tom Shambeau,” “Houses,” “For Me” and “Such a Pretty Day.”

Today I started streaming “Houses” on my main Web site. It’s one of my fave Jamison songs. Here’s what he had to say earlier today about the song:

“Houses” is a song I wrote partially about people who build onto their houses until there’s almost no place to go, with stairs going into ceilings and all. That fascinates me. Also, it’s about things not really being what they seem – sort of keeping things hidden, like the metaphor in the song being what’s inside the (seemingly normal) houses. I recorded it with a keyboard on the organ setting and I overdubbed the voices, so the second voice you hear is actually another track of me singing along, only in a lower octave.

To listen to “Houses,” go to my site here, enter the site and click the play button on the jukebox that is to the bottom right of the photos in the slideshow (next to the “full screen” icon).

Congrats, Jamison!
